Post Cannabis, anyone?
Have there been any bio-engineering projects on altering or improving cannabis? For example:

1. Transferring THC producing properties to a common, quick growing, or inconspicuous plant, or perhaps to algae?

OR

2. Increasing the potency of cannabis? There is a variety known as "Low Ryder" that will mature in as little as six weeks. It was created by crossing a quick maturing (but less potent) ruderalis plant with a sativa. Could this plant be given more of a sativa (body high) or indica (head high) quality than its current ruderalis (downer or tranquilizing) quality?

3. How about a cannibas-like plant that resembles an everyday houseplant, and that thrives under the same extremely low light conditions as some houseplants?

It's not fully understood how the plant makes THC. Because THC is not a protein it probably needs a battery of genes to build the machinery that puts it together. And right now it seems no one completely understands how it's done and what genes are involved.

Also, cannabis is illegal in an awful lot of the world. If you live somewhere where it's illegal, hacking it involves a whole new set of risks not present with, say, tomatoes. You could try tobacco -- I've run experiments with tobacco, although not of that nature.
