Post Kickstarter: Glowing Plants
questions and comments about This Kickstarter Project.

First off, what do you think? Are they on to something? Are they spouting none-sense from their wind pipes? Have they a reasonable chance of success? or are they bound to make a nifty novelty self destructing plant? :?:

What do you think of the commentary on the project? the usual ignorant fear and superstitious paranoia? or is there commentary that deserves informed debate?

I ran a couple searches to see if anyone's mentioned this elsewhere in the forums but I found nothing.

My own take on the situation? A glowing plant sounds nice, but feasibility wise is probably going to be a flop. Making light takes considerable biological energy. A potted plant would run out of nutrients in a matter of weeks, and the liquid fertilizer you'd need to replace it would cost more than light bulbs and electricity. And glowing trees? Light attracts insects, and even if they weren't devoured by every wood eating bug in a 2 mile radius, the nutrients thing would still be a problem. A city would have to sprinkle fertilizer once a month to keep the lights on. Don't get me wrong, I love the project. If I lived in the states I'd definitely have backed the project with enough money to get some seeds. I myself want to (some distant day) get bamboo to produce luciferin and then try adding luciferase to its water.

As for the existing commentary on the project... Same as all the crap people shovel. It makes me enraged. (dramatization) "Oh No! Glowing plants will destroy our ecosystem and poison our water and screw up our sleep cycles and throw off the migratory pattern of birds and take away our rights!!" Yes. Yes, these engineered plants... that have been made much less able to compete with existing ecology... will escape, then defeat the other plants in mortal combat to discern the fate of the world. Please pardon my ridiculousness, it just makes me angry when people bring up the same wrong arguments against GMO's every time the syllables "gene-" is used, as has been discussed many times in other places in the forum.

Again curious to know what you all think about it.
