Philosophy is difficult for me. I tend to get into the discussion where someone says philosophy explains the world. And I say 'No, biology does, the reasons this person is thinking about this as opposed to something else are biological'. And the obvious retort is 'See, that belief is a philosophical one'... and on it goes.

I don't know, to me it seems that philosophers fail miserably when they try to explain existence. Most of them haven't seemed capable of handling their personal lives or the context they live in.

I like the science philosophers better, Popper being the obvious one. There is also an un ortodox guy Ken Wilber. I don't subscribe to most of his ideas but he has one valid one I think: That human ventures have similarities. An example would be; if you want to learn martial arts, first study them all to get an idea of what constitutes martial art, what aspects it consists of. Then observe how different martial arts approach each aspect and then learn each aspect from the best source. I think Wilber spends a lot of time in a new age-ish zone, so there is a lot of overhead. And he is sometimes trying to impose an ill fitting map on the territory. But I enjoy his punkish attitude. A few years ago he wrote an open letter to his critics informing them that they could suck his dick. Literally.

I sometimes feel that philosophy can be a forum where people entertain biological glitches. The first time I heard the story of Epiktetus it seemed like a story of one upmanship to me. Epiktetus was greek slave in rome. He was not free but created a memespace(memeplex) where he was more free that his owners. The moral high ground theme. Once he let his master break his arm to prove his point. Maybe it's just me, but I think a big part of the appeal of the stoics is the one upmaship. Which is a biological glitch.

Derren Brown would have made use of the romans glitches and made him go break his own arm.

The one upmanship glitch is interesting. There is another glitch which makes us feel bad if we perceive that our life doesn't have meaning. Killing god feels great but afterwards we feel a bit depressed. The idea that evolution built us without reason or goal and that we are alone in the universe on our own, going nowhere, responsible for ourselves can feel like shit. But if your neighbor is a jesus freak you can have endless discussions with him where you oneup him cause you're right and he is an idiot... and that makes you feel great again.

It's like we're a rocket of flesh with a big booster engine giving us forward momentum while we have these tiny steering rockets going off on all sides deciding the direction. The tiny steering rockets are our emotions, some of them are irrational and called glitches.

A lot of the philosophy of existence seems to me to be preoccupied with those glitches.

They are claiming an expertise of the inner workings of the world. Seems to me that world also includes the context they live in. It's like the story of the man who was teaching a class on how to succeed in the stock market when a rural character raised his hand and asked him “Are you rich?”


Glitch is an actual word.


When I talked about one-upmanship I meant the glitch. A glitch is not useful or productive, it's more a knee jerk reaction. Deliberately choosing not to listen to everyone as a means of filtering information is something else.
