 Re: Starting projects
Why? What science are you doing? I think all life sciences are awesome! It was a hard decision me to settle with my present research, because there are so many more interesting things...

 Re: Starting projects
I'm still a student, so my dabbling in science is still very broad. I'm studying biotechnology, appropriately enough. Genetic engineering, fermentation cultures and bioremediation are cool, but they just don't have that extra level of awesome that neuroscience does.

 Re: Starting projects
I am also still a student. I study medicine, I "transferred" to neuroscience because previously i was working in the biophysics institute on a research project but my supervising professor left to another university and he took almoust all the equipment with him...Sad...I liked lab work...but now I work with nice little white rats!:D

 Re: Starting projects
I love rats!
A biotech guy at our uni used little white transgenic rats. He didn't get all the proper approval first.
He... doesn't work here any more.

 Re: Starting projects
What do you mean he didnt get the proper approvals? By the way any of you guys know where can I get Agrobacter culture from? The best would be a strain in which the Ti plasmid's tumor enchancing sequence is replaced by pBR322 or something similar.

 Re: Starting projects
There are certain hoops to jump through for transgenic animals. He skipped some. I don't know the details.
No idea on the culture, sorry. But it shouldn't be that hard; we use them all the time. In theory you could go harvest some yourself, but it wouldn't be worth the trouble.

Oh, hey: http://www.sciencestuff.com/prod/5Ls-LiveBac/BLB1002That's cheaper than I would expect, but I guess it depends where you live whether this company can get to you.

 Re: Starting projects
We should run a Biopunk Magazine to generate interest and suck more people into our pipettes, so to speak. With Articles, art works, Poetry, Op eds and tutorials on bio punking, PCR, etc.

The question is what form such a site would have... another social networking site? Would you write articles? -Splicer

We should observe Steam Punk Mag or my favourite Coil house, as an example, and build from there Yes I would.

DanteA wrote: We should observe Steam Punk Mag or my favourite Coil house, as an example, and build from there Yes I would. Coil House looks interesting. Seems well made, very esthetically pleasing. Built on WordPress. Features my old hero Ronnie James Dio on the top of first page even hehehe. Basically a magazine/journal. I would write in one too, I notice my forum posts tend to become articles anyway. My original idea was to use .org as a forum, a kind of bleeding edge scratchpad where ideas could be thrown out and discussed.... and .net for longer articles on more mature ideas. I've tried to find an elegant way to have both a journal and forum on the same site(.org) but I haven't found a satisfactory combination of software to handle that cleanly. You would think that's trivial right? turns out it still isn't. One doesn't want to end up maintaining a customized unsupported software mashup. A forum on .org and a io9/coil house type journal/magazine on .net on a WordPress/Drupal/Joomla cms would be a start? My thoughts. -Splicer Edit: Just got home, read the paper, and saw that the news about Dio was that he died. Feel a bit sad on the inside, he was one of those who created his own reality though perhaps less artfully as he got older.... \m/
