Post Starting projects
Hello, I am new here.

My first project, will involve making hybrid plants using plant cultures. I remember reading about it in a make magazine.

The second is bio-hacking yeast, but too do what?

I have three questions to ask.
One: what plants to use?
Two: what can I make the yeast to do?
Three: what were, are, or going to be your starting projects?

Thank you for reading, please tell me what you think.

Hey Teslaboypunk,

Check out http://ag.arizona.edu/pubs/garden/mg/pr ... fting.html for a simplified culture and some info about grafting.

I think the first project will be hacking a plant, maybe moss(grows fast). The “Hello World” would probably be adding my name or some message to the genome. Next hack size, growth rate and appearance.

Sounds like a cool project. Did you get the name splicer from bioshock?

Yes. I think I decided to use it when I was reading about the game. I haven't actually played it though.

I liked the name, it means something like “splicing ideas into the idea space.” to me.

“Brother Splicer” sounds good too.

I forgot to say before that after the initial "hello world" and plant project the next project is to build zombies of course.

Zombies sound better then dino-chickens.

Freeman Dyson says he would like to see people play with dinosaurs but not microbes. I think it's in the same talk where he says it's a bad idea to ask him about the future. He illustrates this with the story about how he in 1945 advised Francis Crick not to go into biology.

How exactly does one add one's name to a genome? The base pair naming convention we use contains four letters and you run a much higher risk of screwing something up if your name doesn't have a number of letters divisible by 3. (I suppose you could add a filler base or two if not, though...) Do you mean you're going to develop a signature protein for the plant to express or something?

I was thinking of writing it in cipher in some unexpressed sequence of the genome. Only I would have to know it was there. And if I wanted to make it public I could share the cipher and the position.

Or you could use one-letter amino acid code? Granted, this seems somewhat less meaningful if it's in a location where it'll never be expressed...

SPLICER = Ser Pro Leu Ile Cys Glu Arg

letters missing from amino acids: B, J, O, U, X, Z

You are right. I kind of like the idea that only I and the ones I choose to tell know of the hack though.

You could have a color on the plant and have that color group into a word.

How about this as a Biopunk hack? Hacking minds instead of molecules.

(Sorry. All versions of this clip seem to have to be played from directly from youtube.)
