 True Bacterial Cement
Hi Everyone at BioPunks,
This is an hypothesis that is close to my heart, but have not been able to do anything about it because of lack of time, infrastructure and resources. However I am throwing my idea here so that some one attempts to approach this and may be even include me.
Here goes:
Genetically adding a gene from shell producing mollusks in calcium precipitating bacteria, which can lead to creating of stronger and more environmentally friendly. A lot of research is going on currently, but none of it in such a way. Please let me know of the problems that such an idea is going to lead to.
Thanks,

 Re: True Bacterial Cement
Hi Justme,
Check out the Newcastle iGEM team 2010. They used a quorum sensing based modular approach so that when bacterial cells reached quorum, some produced calcium carbonate, some became filamentous as reinforcement, and all of the cells produced Levans glue as a method to hold the crack together. This was meant as a concrete crack filler.
Here is their webpage:http://2010.igem.org/Team:Newcastle
Hope that gives you a little more information on your project.

 Re: True Bacterial Cement
Yeah something like that.. But I want to improve on the cement by introducing a gene from sea shell producing organisms...

 Re: True Bacterial Cement
That is a really good idea! Which genes were you thinking of?
